Smooth Jazz Classics

An hour of smooth jazz with Mike Goss — the music that shaped a lifetime of listening, chosen with the care of someone who has loved it from the very beginning.
Hi, I'm Michael Goss! I've been hosting "My Place" since early 2020 and "Boogie Town" since around October the same year. My love for disco started way back in 1975 when I ran the Crimson Mist mobile disco — originally chauffeured around by my dad until I bought my own van in '76. But even as a kid, I had a soft spot for smooth jazz from legends like Quincy Jones (Soul Bossa Nova), Percy Faith, and Herb Alpert. These days, smooth jazz is where my heart really lies — hence, My Place! Some of my later loves include the likes of Paul Hardcastle, Brian Culbertson, and Carlos Camilo.
Late in 2025 I handed over the "Boogie Town" show to my disco partner from a decade or two back, Mr. Sandy Bruce. He is breathing new life into "Boogie Town" and adds his own flavour to it. This has left me with more time, so I have embarked on a new show which I call "My Other Place". This is really a show of anything goes but mostly "If Michael Likes It, Michael Will Play It". Early feedback is positive — so why not give it a listen?
As for my career journey? Well, let's just say it's been varied! I "borrowed" a couple of years to get a Saturday job at a metal workshop when I was 15, earning enough to fund my disco gear (much of it home built). After college, I landed in the test lab at Goblin — remember the Teasmade and vacuum cleaners? Then came more college, a six-month stint in Oregon, and a role at Dolby Laboratories as a test engineer.
I eventually moved into the fire alarm industry, climbing the ladder to Department Manager overseeing all things audio-visual. At 35, I took the plunge and started my own company, Quantum Power, specializing in commercial audio, CCTV, and fire alarms. After decades of hard work, I retired about 10 years ago but still take on the occasional project that piques my interest.
Outside of music, I keep busy with volunteer work at Sanderstead United Reformed Church and the Sanderstead and Selsdon Rotary Club.
On the personal side, I was married from 1987 to 2011 and have two wonderful daughters, Joanie and Abigail. Fun fact: Abi has presented a dozen shows on Big Ear — her voice is just gorgeous! These days, I live alone, which has its perks — like working to my own schedule!
As a true music lover, as much as I enjoy my smooth jazz there is loads of other music out there just waiting to be discovered. So now, I have "My Other Place". For most people it will be an hour of discovery.
I like to find music both young and old, often from bands that reinvent old tracks. Perhaps the piece of music that got away but sounds right today — and of course I do play several well-known tracks. If you find something that you just know others will like, let me know. Maybe I'll play it?
It's really a case of "If Michael Likes It, Michael Will Play It."
Listen Live"An hour of discovery — music both young and old, tracks that got away, bands that reinvent the classics, and everything in between."

My Place moves across the full breadth of smooth jazz — six areas that together make each hour feel complete, warm and worth lingering in.
The foundation of everything Mike loves about music. The giants — Quincy Jones, Herb Alpert, Percy Faith — whose arrangements and vision shaped smooth jazz into an art form. These are the tracks that started it all.
Smooth jazz was made for the evening hours — when the day softens and the music takes over. Mike curates the perfect late-night listening experience: warm, unhurried and just right for whatever the night brings.
Behind every great track is a story — a musician who spent a lifetime finding their sound. Mike explores the artists who made smooth jazz what it is, from their earliest recordings to their lasting legacy.
Where smooth jazz crosses into R&B, soul and funk — the intersections that gave the genre its warmth and groove. Mike explores the music that blurs the lines and is better for it.
The underplayed, the overlooked and the brilliantly obscure. Mike has spent decades digging through the smooth jazz catalogue and his passion for finding lesser-known treasures is one of the real joys of the show.
Personal selections from a man who has loved this music his entire life. These are the tracks Mike plays because they move him — no agenda, no formula. Just a genuine recommendation from someone who has heard it all.
